In September, a team from BCDH supported excavations at Etruscan Ceverteri led by Martin Bentz. The goal of the 2021 campaign was to digitally document a whole series of burial mounds and chamber tombs centered around the massive Campana tumulus in the Monte Abatone necropolis. In addition, the BCDH team documented every step of the ongoing excavation using 3D digital techniques. At the same time, the project staff was trained in the use of state-of-the-art digital documentation methods to integrate them into their own work process and replace analog methods. In addition, most of the necropolis was surveyed with a drone to create, for the first time, a high-resolution terrain model that will help archaeologists study and understand the complex spatial relationships of the several hundred tombs in the more than 100-hectare Monte Abatone necropolis.
